What does a bad wheel bearing sound like? Would it make noise when turning the steering wheel?
Q. What type of sound would indicate a bad wheel bearing? What would it sound like, and when would you hear the sound? When turning the steering wheel, would you hear anything?
Asked by ~ Sasha ~ - Thu Aug 14 19:01:02 2008 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments
A. It can sound everywhere from a little whistle, when it first starts to go, all the way to a roaring grinding type noise. The easiest way to check is to jack the front end up and place it on a jack stand(better safe than sorry). Then you grab the top and bottom of the wheel and try to wiggle it with your hands. If you feel any play, and your a-arms aren't moving, then you wheel bearing is probably bad. It can also be the pivot points at the hub, but if it is them, then someone watching will be able to see if the hub is moving with the wheel or not. If the hub is moving with the wheel, then you have some bad joints, if not, then your bearings are worn out. Good luck.

A. you didn't say what the problem was so how can we help you. Is the car pulling to one side or is the steering wheel shaking. Depending on the problem it could be a bad tie rod or some type of bushing. That's what I meant by you didn't say what the problem was.

What is the average lifespan of a front wheel bearing on automobiles?
Q. 2003 Yukon...replaced at 80k 2004 Silverado...replaced at 30k I have never had to replace a wheel bearing on any automobile I have ever owned over nearly 50 years! What is up with this?

A. Cheap grease, how much weigh are you carrying in those light truck. I would not be upset with the 80k on my pick up, but I have driven in the bays in South Florida at low tide. The 30K is way to low of a number, I hope it was still under warrants. I have notice that wheel bearing are now coming in from China. But that could be a cop out, to say the lest. Do you, repack W.B ever year, it may be time to start. I wonder where you drive, is there any why that road salt could get past the seals, and cause faster break down of the grease. Not to be a smarty, next time look at a Ford.

How do I tell which side my wheel bearing is bad on?
Q. Hi All - I am pretty sure I have a messed up wheel bearing in one of my front tires. We have replaced a wheel bearing in a back tire before, but the front tire's mechanics are different and a bit more daunting. I have a 2000 Honda Civic and from reading the repair manual, I can only assume that I must remove the hub, then have a professional hydraulic press the bearings for me. My main problem right now is that I can't tell what side the bearing is bad on! There is a distinct rotation noise when I turn left, but I don't know if that means the left bearing is rubbing harder due to pressure, or if the right one's lack of pressure during the turn is causing the noise to increase in volume. Any help in a diagnosis? Help a poor, confused… [cont.]

A. If you turn the car to the left and it gets louder then it is your right side that is bad. If you turn to the right and the noise gets louder then it is the left side. But with experience I have found that they normally go bad together or shortly apart. I changed my right and within a month had to change the left so same some hassle and have them both changed at the same time

would a bad wheel bearing cause the car to pulsate when stoppping?
Q. the front and back pads and rotors have been replaced and its still pulsating, then yesterday I heard a loud humming that sounded like a bad wheel bearing. It starts about 45-50 mph and stops when I stop but the car is still pulsating. I feel it in the pedal and the whole car, cant feel it in the steering wheel or seat. i dont know who gave you guys all thumb down, but I appreciate everyones answers!
Asked by B U S Y - Wed Jun 11 10:55:08 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If a wheel bearing is bad enough (has enough play in it) you could possibly notice some pulsation when braking. The humming noise is indicative of a bearing starting to fail. The most likely cause of your pulsation is a warped brake rotor. If the rotors were turned (resurfaced) it is possible that they are thin enough and got hot enough to warp. We have seen new rotors right out of the box that were warped. You should take the vehicle to a reputable shop and have them inspect it for a bad bearing and check the runout (amount of warpage) on the rotors. Hope this helps!

What is the cost to replace the left front wheel bearing on a 2000 Hyundai Sonata?
Q. How much would it cost to replace my front left wheel bearing on my 2000 hyundai sonata. Im hoping it doesn't cost to much seeing im a student and don't have a lot of cash. Estimate or possible range would be nice.

A. For labor, it takes from 1 to 2 hours a wheel. That can be $70-$150 an hour, depending on where you get them replaced. If you want a deal on wheel bearings, go to and fill out the form on the right side. They will send you an email with a price and link to the bearing. I hope that helps!

How can I tell a bad wheel bearing from a bad tire?
Q. My truck is making a "wu wu wu wu" sound going down the road. It is not constant, sometimes it happens and sometimes does not. I'm not sure if it's a wheel bearing or a bad tire?
Asked by gary c - Fri Oct 26 14:48:00 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments
A. if you can pinpoint which wheel the noise is coming from you can jack the vehicle up and try to see if there is any movement or free play in the wheel bearing by putting one hand on top and one hand on the bottom of the tire and trying to move it up and down. if there is a significant amount of free play I'd say your wheel bearing is bad. If not, I'd say you have a bad tire, possibly a broken belt in the tire. hope this helps.

Can an average mechanically inclined person change the front wheel bearing assembly on 3/4T Chev Van?
Q. My garage wants $254 plus $75 labor to replace the wheel bearing assembly on my Chev G2500 Van. I would like to do it myself to save the money. I used to change and repack bearing on my cars and trucks. Are there any special tools required? Is this job reasonably straight forward? Are there any tricks or short cuts?
Asked by ejlang42 - Sat Jul 4 09:19:24 2009 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Well, I don't know what year it is, and a 2500 would be a GMC, and a Chevy 3/4 ton Van would be a G20 (at least here in the US), but I feel reasonably confident that it is not 4 wheel drive or front wheel drive. There was a company called Vandura which used to do 4 wheel conversions years ago, but otherwise...no. So anyway, what you're looking at is a normal rear wheel drive disc brake rotor that needs to be taken off. Jack that corner of the van up, support it with a jackstand, and take the wheel off (probably a 13/16 inch lug nut). You'll need probably a 3/8 inch Allen head wrench to remove the brake caliper retaining bolts. You may need to push the caliper piston in a little bit to remove the caliper, especially if the rotors are… [cont.]

A. remove the tires, remove carter pin and nut from the axle, slide rotor out just a little so you can see and remove the bearing washer, bring rotor all the way off of the axle and keep it facing up. put rotor on clean work bench[can't have no dust or dirt on your bearing or inside of your rotor] and remove bearing. you can push the bearing from inside to remove bearing being carefully not to scar your rotor. [ while you're there check your brakes]when installing new bearing use proper grease to insure long life of the bearing..[caution] use care when reinstalling the axle nut and don't over tighten, just enough so the new carter pin can be install...get your bearing from your ford dealer. you'll pay a little more but you'll get better quality. A. remove the tires, remove carter pin and nut from the axle, slide rotor out just a little so you can see and remove the bearing washer, bring rotor all the way off of the axle and keep it facing up. put rotor on clean work bench[can't have no dust or dirt on your bearing or inside of your rotor] and remove bearing. you can push the bearing from inside to remove bearing being carefully not to scar your rotor. A. I put a couple thousand miles on a bad wheel bearing in my 88 escort. It make a lot of thunk.thunk.thunk.thunk noise and eventually seized. When it seized the hub was spinning in the bearing which ruined the hub. Cost of bearing: about $8 cost of hub $55. It's your car and your call, but I wouldn't risk more damage for $8.

out the window It s better to spend your money on the tool you get to keep If you can get the free loaner tool from the parts store then you can put your money into bearings for both sides
