Wheel bearing?
Q. Got a whirring noise on me Astra mk4 coupe when i drive. it starts around 30 mph and goe's away after 65mph. just had 4 brand new good tyres put on a month ago so surely cant be them.. the noise sounds like its coming from the front passenger and when im going right on a bend the noise gets louder and when i go left on a bend the noise goes. could it be my wheel bearing or something like that? Thanks Thanks for all the fantastic answers people. there seems to be no play in the wheel when i check it. Another thing is i have to replace the hub as the bearing is build into it so that will be expensive so have to be 100% sure. Again thanks for the good advice

A. It could be the wheel bearing, or a cv axle Last time my car was doing this I was getting a horrid wheel shake as well. I ended up replacing my wheel bearing/hub assemblies, my inner and outter tie rod ends. Which did fix the problem.

What sound does a front wheel bearing make when it needs replaced?
Q. I have a 1995 Dodge Avenger; while driving it as of late it sounds like a rubbing noise (not metal on metal) on the front right wheel. Could the front bearing be going out? Any help is appreciated!
Asked by sap75_51534 - Fri Dec 14 17:35:18 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Usually makes a heavy creaking noise, but it is possible. I would be more inclined to think brake pads . . . Grab the top of the tire and push in and out, if the bearing is bad, there should be some wobbling and you should be able to hear it.

How much to fix breaks and wheel bearing?
Q. I have a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix. I believe I only need to replace the front break pads and rotors. I also believe it is the front wheel bearing that needs replaced. (The sound is coming from near the front of the car) I know how much the parts are, but how much is the estimated repair? Also, is there a huge difference between ceramic and metallic break pads??? Thanks!

A. It will first ruin the tire and at worst the wheel and hub will separate from the car causing an accident or tow.

Q. I need to replace my front wheel bearing hub on my 2003 saturn vue but couldnt find the manual at any parts store. Its a front wheel drive, 4 cylinder, and no abs. Can anyone please help?

A. Very basically you have to remove the large nut holding your cv axle on the hub, remove the four bolts holding the hub assembly to the steering knuckle, and very carefully slide the hub assembly off the cv axle spline. Installation is reversed, being careful to "fit" the new hub assembly over the cv axle spline, reinstall and tighten the four bolts, and install the nut and washer. There are torque values specified for the bolts and nut, but good and tight normally works well...if you aren't well versed in mechanical procedures, it is something a shop should do for you though...

would a bad wheel bearing cause the car to pulsate when stoppping?
Q. the front and back pads and rotors have been replaced and its still pulsating, then yesterday I heard a loud humming that sounded like a bad wheel bearing. It starts about 45-50 mph and stops when I stop but the car is still pulsating. I feel it in the pedal and the whole car, cant feel it in the steering wheel or seat. i dont know who gave you guys all thumb down, but I appreciate everyones answers!
Asked by B U S Y - Wed Jun 11 10:55:08 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. If a wheel bearing is bad enough (has enough play in it) you could possibly notice some pulsation when braking. The humming noise is indicative of a bearing starting to fail. The most likely cause of your pulsation is a warped brake rotor. If the rotors were turned (resurfaced) it is possible that they are thin enough and got hot enough to warp. We have seen new rotors right out of the box that were warped. You should take the vehicle to a reputable shop and have them inspect it for a bad bearing and check the runout (amount of warpage) on the rotors. Hope this helps!

How much would it cost to replace a right front wheel bearing?
Q. What should i expect to pay in parts and labor to have a right front wheel bearing replaced on a 4x4 1991 Ford Explorer.
Asked by David W - Mon Oct 1 22:02:20 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I actually looked this up for you. You can go to a shop and get a menu price bearing repack for $69.99. The bearings without mark up, run $24.99 each including the races. That $69.99 maintenance repack will be thrown in to combination labor now. The labor is $69.99 ($29.99 during a maintenance brake job). Since you have a 4x4, that adds 2.0 hours labor. Some shops have a menu price on 4x4 serviceable wheel bearing repacks. You will spend about $100.00 in parts after they are marked up, shop supplies etc, and then roughly you can count on 2 hours labor at the shop's hourly rate. I would tend to agree this will run about $300.00.

Is it dangerous to drive with a bad wheel bearing?
Q. My wheel bearing on my car has been getting bad for the past six months or so, everytime I hit 40 mph my car makes a really loud "rowing" or boat type noise like it's humming. Thing is I do plan on getting a new car in about four weeks. Should I get the wheel bearing replaced or just wait four weeks till I get a new car. Thing is it will cost about 300 bucks to replace and I'd only use my car for four more weeks.

A. Very dangerous. Take a cab or ride with someone. The bad wheel can fail and take the wheel right out of your hand making you suddenly change lanes into someone.

How do you change a worn wheel bearing on a 2003 Suburban?
Q. My original question was "What's causing a roaring noise on my Suburban;" but my question was answered with a similar question. So now that I know it's a worn wheel bearing, my question is "How do you change the wheel bearing?" I've always done most of my vehicle maintenance, including changing the oil, belt(s), hoses, thermostat, etc. (basic things). Now I think I would like to tackle the bearings. If someone can give me a little guidance, it would be appreciated.

A. Front or Rear? The front, you need to punch out the bearing races and pound in the new ones, easy but takes time. There are areas inside that will allow you to get in a punch. The rear you'll need to pull the shaft and take it to a mechanic to have the old one pressed off and the new one pressed on. As mentioned before, getting a manual is your first priority. If you don't have one by now, how can you do your own maintenance?

Can an average mechanically inclined person change the front wheel bearing assembly on 3/4T Chev Van?
Q. My garage wants $254 plus $75 labor to replace the wheel bearing assembly on my Chev G2500 Van. I would like to do it myself to save the money. I used to change and repack bearing on my cars and trucks. Are there any special tools required? Is this job reasonably straight forward? Are there any tricks or short cuts?

A. Well, I don't know what year it is, and a 2500 would be a GMC, and a Chevy 3/4 ton Van would be a G20 (at least here in the US), but I feel reasonably confident that it is not 4 wheel drive or front wheel drive. There was a company called Vandura which used to do 4 wheel conversions years ago, but otherwise...no. So anyway, what you're looking at is a normal rear wheel drive disc brake rotor that needs to be taken off. Jack that corner of the van up, support it with a jackstand, and take the wheel off (probably a 13/16 inch lug nut). You'll need probably a 3/8 inch Allen head wrench to remove the brake caliper retaining bolts. You may need to push the caliper piston in a little bit to remove the caliper, especially if the rotors are… [cont.]

Q. How do I replace/repair a 1993 Ford Explorer AWD Front wheel bearing and seal. Where can I get a good price on the parts??

A. remove the tires, remove carter pin and nut from the axle, slide rotor out just a little so you can see and remove the bearing washer, bring rotor all the way off of the axle and keep it facing up. put rotor on clean work bench[can't have no dust or dirt on your bearing or inside of your rotor] and remove bearing. you can push the bearing from inside to remove bearing being carefully not to scar your rotor. [ while you're there check your brakes]when installing new bearing use proper grease to insure long life of the bearing..[caution] use care when reinstalling the axle nut and don't over tighten, just enough so the new carter pin can be install...get your bearing from your ford dealer. you'll pay a little more but you'll get better quality. Hi everyone: Its time to have the front . wheel bearings. (non-wet) packed on our new to us 99 Executive. My questions is: How many shop hours of labor should it take? Today, a shop quoted me 6 hrs? At $10.
