Noun

library (plural libraries)

  1. An institution which holds books and/or other forms of stored information for use by the public or qualified people. It is usual, but not a defining feature of a library, for it to be housed in rooms of a building, to lend items of its collection to members either with or without payment, and to provide various other services for its community of users.
  2. A collection of books or other forms of stored information. An individual may refer to his collection of books and other items as his library.
  3. An equivalent collection of analogous information in a non-printed form, e.g. record library
  4. (computer science) A collection of subprograms used to develop software.

A library is a collection of sources, resources, and services, and the structure in which it is housed; it is organized for use and maintained by a public body, an institution, or a private individual. In the more traditional sense, a library is a collection of books. It can mean the collection, the building or room that houses such a collection, or both. The term "library" has itself acquired a secondary meaning: "a collection of useful material for common use." This sense is used in fields such as computer science, mathematics, statistics, electronics and biology. It can also be used by publishers in naming series of related books, e.g. The Library of Anglo-Catholic Theology. Libraries often provide a place of silence for studying.

Public and institutional collections and services may be intended for use by people who choose not to — or cannot afford to — purchase an extensive collection themselves, who need material no individual can reasonably be expected to have, or who require professional assistance with their research. In addition to providing materials, libraries also provide the services of librarians who are experts at finding and organizing information and at interpreting information needs.

However, with the sets and collection of media and of media other than books for storing information, many libraries are now also repositories and access points for maps, prints, or other documents and various storage media such as microform (microfilm/microfiche), audio tapes, CDs, cassettes, videotapes, DVDs, and video games. Libraries may also provide public facilities to access subscription databases and the Internet.

Thus, modern libraries are increasingly being redefined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats and from many sources. They are understood as extending beyond the physical walls of a building, by including material accessible by electronic means, and by providing the assistance of librarians in navigating and analyzing tremendous amounts of information with a variety of digital tools.

What books would you suggest for building a high school library?
Q. My old high school, which my sister currently attends, is building up its library. The school is only four years old, and the library doesn't have very many books. What books would you consider to be "essential" to a high school library, or any library in general? Or how would you recommend the school go about building up the library? All suggestions are welcome, thank you. Note: Twilight is already in the library, as are the Harry Potter and Eragon series.

A. Here are links to the two largest book distributors in the U.S., both of whom have school library supply programs: Below is an interesting site where you can purchase used books very inexpensively, often cheaper than wholesale new, and the shipping is really low too. On top of that it serves a charitable cause. Your school may or may not find it useful. I just wanted to throw it out there because I recently found it and thought it was cool. Here are a variety of decent lists, ranging from teen reads, to AP suggestions, to just general great books lists. If nothing else they may serve as a reminder of all that is out there. i hope at least some of this is useful to you.

How can I transfer my iTunes library from one to another?
Q. I've just bought a new Mac and thought I had successfully migrated my library from iTunes on my old Mac to my new one. However, everytime I try to play a file it gives me the following dialog box "the original file could not be found'. I copied all the files to my iTunes library folder - what's happening?

A. If you pick any tune, right-click (or apple-click) on it, click 'Get Info', and look under Summary, does it give "Where:" information for the file? If so, is that address wrong? If so you somehow need to tell iTunes to automatically repoint all of its library information to the right folder. Under 'Advanced' in Preferences, what are the iTunes library locations? Have you tried adding the new location? Apologies if any of this doesn't add up because my iTunes is PC-based.
